A Brief History of Jordan

History of Jordan from ancient kingdoms through the Arab Revolt, independence in 1946 and the Hashemite Kingdom today.

Jordan's history stretches back to some of the earliest cities on Earth. The land of the biblical Ammonites, Moabites and Edomites became the Nabataean kingdom of Petra, then a chain of Roman Decapolis cities, Byzantine church capitals and the centre of early Islamic culture before the Crusaders, Mamluks and Ottomans left their mark.

In 1921 the Hashemite prince Abdullah founded the Emirate of Transjordan, and on 25 May 1946 the country became the independent Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Today its rulers and people draw on this layered past as tourism in Jordan thrives. Travellers who hire car & driver in Jordan cross this history on every road, and full package tours to Jordan tell the story site by site.
