The Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve at around 320 square kilometres, protects a dramatic sequence of habitats from Mediterranean woodland down to desert. It is a globally important bird area with over 215 recorded species, including the endangered Syrian serin and the sooty falcon.
Raptors such as Bonelli's eagle and griffon vulture patrol the cliffs, while warblers, wheatears and finches fill the scrub. The Dana-to-Petra trail passes some of the finest birding.
