The Hashemites are the descendants of the Hashemite branch of the Quraysh, the tribe of the Prophet Muhammad, who for centuries held the role of Sharif — custodian of Mecca and Medina. Sharif Hussein bin Ali, Grand Sharif of Mecca, led the Great Arab Revolt of 1916.
